KAKATA, Margibi County — Liberia is facing a major public-security concern following the mass escape of 99 inmates from the Kakata Central Prison on Sunday, September 20, 2026.
Of the 99 inmates who reportedly escaped, 22 have been recaptured, while 77 remain at large, according to reports from authorities.
The escapees have reportedly dispersed into different communities, raising serious concerns among residents who may unknowingly come into contact with individuals who have escaped from lawful custody.
The situation is particularly concerning given the large number of inmates still unaccounted for. With 77 escapees reportedly still on the run, communities in and around Margibi are being urged to remain highly vigilant and immediately report suspicious individuals or information about the whereabouts of any escapee to law enforcement.
Members of the public are strongly advised not to confront or attempt to apprehend escapees themselves, but instead alert the authorities.
The mass breakout has created a significant security challenge for law enforcement, with authorities now faced with the task of tracking down dozens of inmates who have scattered into surrounding communities.
Residents are encouraged to stay alert, watch their surroundings and protect their families, particularly as the search for the escapees continues.
Anyone with credible information regarding the whereabouts of an escapee can contact Prison Superintendent Varney Lake at 0777483237 or the nearest security authority.
Whistleblower Liberia will continue to monitor developments surrounding the Kakata prison break.
Safety First. Security First. Communities First. Families First. Liberia First.
