MONROVIA, LIBERIA — September 4, 2026: Criminal Court “C” Judge Ousman F. Feika has reportedly granted former Vice President Jewel Howard-Taylor compassionate release from detention, following concerns over her medical condition.
The reported ruling allows Howard-Taylor to leave the Monrovia Central Prison and receive medical care outside the correctional facility while her criminal case remains pending.
Under the reported conditions of the release, Howard-Taylor is expected to surrender all travel documents to the court, restricting her ability to leave Liberia.
The court has also reportedly placed restrictions on visitors to her residence, with only a designated family member and her physician or physician’s assistant permitted to visit her.
The development comes after Howard-Taylor’s legal team raised concerns about her health and argued that continued detention could negatively affect her medical condition.
Howard-Taylor had previously been denied a request for compassionate or medical detention by the Monrovia City Court and was subsequently remanded at the Monrovia Central Prison. The court had cited her medical reports and ruled that the request before it did not justify the proposed detention arrangement.
Her lawyers subsequently continued their legal challenge, with the former Vice President’s health remaining a major issue in the proceedings. Reports indicate that her defense has also sought access to her medical records and an independent medical evaluation.
Howard-Taylor was arrested on August 19, 2026, at Roberts International Airport and later charged in connection with an alleged transnational narcotics trafficking investigation. She has denied the allegations.
The charges against her remain allegations, and she is presumed innocent unless proven guilty by a court of competent jurisdiction.
Judge Feika’s reported decision marks a significant development in the case, potentially allowing the former Vice President to receive continued medical care outside prison while remaining under judicial restrictions.
Developing story.
