Former UP Chair Wilmot Paye announces 2023 run for President

Roughly three years to the crucial 2023 General and Presidential elections, former Unity Party Chairman Wilmot Paye has announced his run for the Liberian Presidency.

Paye made the call Monday when he appeared on OK FM Morning Rush Show in Monrovia.

Hon. Paye has been battling the Unity Party in Court after he prayed the court to rescind his party’s decision following what he called unconstitutional removal.

He told OK FM he is holding consultation across the country with key stakeholders to jump start his effort but 2020 midterm senatorial election will make a huge determination for him.

The ex UP Chair said the Presidency is not ascribed to anyone name,party or individual so the discussion must now be broadened to give others an opportunity.

Paye however said a united opposition is cardinal to solving Liberia’s nightmare and he is willing to be in that mix.

The former UP Chair is a firebrand intellectual who differed with former President Sirleaf fearlessly, winning him huge admiration from some party faithfuls.

Actors within UP feared it was Paye and others disagreement with Madam Sirleaf that cost them the 2017 election.

The former UP strong man hails from vote rich Nimba County and could be a factor given his grassroot mobilization spirit and uprightness.

His admiration swelled following his removal only after ex President Sirleaf chose to return to the party only if certain figures depart.

The UP has not reacted to Paye’s announcement.
