MONROVIA, Liberia — September 4, 2026: Former Mayor of Monrovia and current Secretary-General of the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC), Jefferson T. Koijee, has accused President Joseph Nyuma Boakai of ordering the arrest of former President George Manneh Weah, alleging that dismissed Justice Minister and Attorney General Cllr. N. Oswald Tweh was removed from office after refusing to carry out the reported order.
Koijee made the allegations in a Facebook statement on Thursday while congratulating Tweh following President Boakai’s decision to remove him as Minister of Justice and Attorney General on Wednesday.
“I extend my revolutionary congratulations to my compatriot, Justice Minister Cllr. N. Oswald Tweh, for his outstanding and rare courage in refusing Mr. Boakai’s reported orders to arrest Comrade President George M. Weah and in risking taking the country down a dangerous road,” Koijee wrote.
Koijee did not provide evidence to substantiate the allegation, and the Boakai administration had not publicly responded to the claim at the time of publication.
In his statement, Koijee accused the president of assuming what he described as the “arrogant garment of King Pharaoh,” warning that Liberia’s peace and democratic gains must not be jeopardized by political retaliation.
“THE MASK IS OFF!” Koijee declared.
He further accused the government of pursuing what he called political revenge and warned that Liberians would resist any actions that could threaten the country’s peace and democratic order.
“The Liberian people have suffered too long. NEVER AGAIN!” Koijee wrote. “They will never accept a return to war in their native land. They will certainly, fearlessly defend our democracy and resist any tyranny that attempts political revenge or seeks to drag Liberia back into those dark ages.”
Koijee also disclosed that former President Weah is expected to pay what he described as a “revolutionary visit” to former Vice President Jewel Howard-Taylor, describing the visit as an expression of solidarity.
“No intimidation, obstruction or political provocation will erase that solidarity,” he said.
The former Monrovia mayor described Tweh’s alleged refusal to arrest Weah as an act of courage, saying the dismissed justice minister had prevented the country from being taken down what he characterized as a dangerous political path.
“Our peace was purchased at too great a price. Our democracy will be defended. Tyranny and political revenge will be fearlessly resisted!” Koijee concluded.
The allegations come amid heightened political tensions surrounding the Boakai administration and opposition criticism of the government’s handling of several politically sensitive matters.
Koijee, a prominent CDC figure and one of the administration’s most vocal critics, has repeatedly accused the Boakai government of political persecution and warned against actions that could undermine Liberia’s post-war democratic stability.
