OPINION: CDC Secretary General Jefferson Koijee Calls For Police IG Investigation Over Capitol Hill Incident

I hereby condemn in the strongest terms the recent fire incident that occurred at Capitol Hill in Monrovia. This unfortunate tragedy underscores the fragile state of security in our country.

The peace and stability of Liberia is bigger than any individual’s reckless actions or short-sighted display of leadership. The failure of the Liberia National Police (LNP) to protect the lives and properties of the citizens has become evident time and time again. It is disheartening that, under the leadership of Police Inspector Gregory Coleman, the security forces have failed to adequately respond to multiple incidents that have claimed the lives of innocent citizens.

Under the stewardship of Gregory Coleman, we have witnessed an alarming rise in the number of deaths, police brutality and the deepening of a security crisis that continues to shake our nation. The recent fire at Capitol Hill serves as a stark reminder of how ineffective the LNP has been in ensuring the safety and well-being of the Liberian people. From earlier incidents of police brutality to the failure to adequately manage civil disobedience, Coleman’s leadership has proven more harmful than helpful. The Liberian people deserve a police force that is dedicated to serving and protecting them, not one that is plagued by incompetence and irresponsibility.

We believe that the hard-earned peace of our country is far more significant than Gregory Coleman’s careless showmanship of intoxication or his failure to address the growing security concerns that our citizens face on a daily basis. It is time for the leadership of the Liberia National Police to be held accountable for its numerous failures in securing our nation.

We call for a full independent investigation into the fire incident at Capitol Hill and demand that Police IG Coleman, who has been in charge of the premises and under his instructions, becomes a prime suspect in these investigations. We must ensure that this kind of tragedy does not occur again and that those in positions of authority are held to the highest standards of accountability.

The Congress for Democratic Change under the stewardship of Amb. George WEAH has been the custodian of our nation’s peace and democracy for twelve years in opposition and six years in government. We like to reassure all Liberians that we will not sit supinely and Mr. Boakai and his Risky Mission put our democracy at the verge of demise.

We call for the unconditional release of all Liberians imprisoned and that trumped up and bogus charges be dropped!!

The Congress for Democratic Change will continue to stand up for the rights of all citizens and a more secure Liberia, where the rule of law is upheld and where every citizen regardless of their background is treated with the respect and dignity they deserve. We call upon this government to take immediate action to weed out armed robbers out of the Police and ensure that Justice is served. JTK
