Senate Mandates Education Minister

The Plenary of the Liberian Senate has instructed its Committee on Education and Public Administration to work with the Minister of Education to implement all of the issues raised by Senators during the appearance of the Minister to report in two weeks.

The plenary of the Liberian Senate cited the Education Minister on November 25, 2021 to address issues affecting the Educational sector.

The Senate wants the MOE authority to provide a comprehensive statistics with respect to the names of teachers, schools of assignment in various Counties, qualifications, as well as detailed information about the status of retirements of employees on the Ministry’s payroll amongst others.

During his appearance, Minister Ansu D. Sonii outlined lack of logistics especially in the area of transportation for County Education officers as a major Challenge for CEOs and DEOs not monitoring the various Schools in the Districts and Counties of their assignments.

Minister Sonii also informed the Plenary of the Liberian Senate that he has failed to regulate private Schools due to the lack of funding. He further mentioned that the Ministry has the authority to regulate all schools across the Country, with the exception for tertiary education.

The decision of the Plenary was trigged from concerns raised by Government Teachers that were retired without receiving their benefits and also the names of Teachers on the payroll and cannot be seen in the classrooms in the various Counties.
