Monrovia, Liberia – The United States has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Liberia’s fight against transnational crime and illicit drug trafficking, a development that comes as public scrutiny continues to intensify over the government’s handling of the reported US$19 million cocaine seizure at Roberts International Airport.

According to a statement issued by the U.S. Embassy in Monrovia, Chargé d’Affaires Joe Zadrozny recently met with Liberia’s Minister of Justice, Cllr. N. Oswald Tweh, to discuss ongoing cooperation between both countries in strengthening the rule of law and combating transnational criminal networks.

During the meeting, the U.S. diplomat reaffirmed Washington’s commitment to supporting Liberia’s justice sector as it works to hold criminal organizations accountable and protect communities from illicit trafficking and financial crimes.

The Embassy noted that through the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL), the United States has continued providing assistance to Liberia in areas including combating human trafficking, reducing drug demand, and strengthening counternarcotics and law enforcement effectiveness.

The renewed commitment comes against the backdrop of mounting public concern surrounding the government’s investigation into the massive cocaine seizure intercepted at Roberts International Airport. Since the drugs were confiscated, opposition parties, civil society organizations, and many Liberians have questioned the pace and transparency of the investigation, arguing that key questions surrounding those responsible remain unanswered.

Among the strongest critics has been Alternative National Congress (ANC) Political Leader Alexander B. Cummings, who recently described the government’s handling of the investigation as appearing “secretive, slow, and seemingly compromised.” Cummings has repeatedly called for an independent investigation, arguing that the credibility of the process is being undermined by the lack of transparency and the government’s failure to provide regular updates to the Liberian public.

“The investigation has been secretive, slow, and seemingly compromised,” Cummings said during a recent press conference, adding that Liberia cannot afford to send the message that powerful criminal networks can escape accountability.

The latest engagement between the U.S. Embassy and Liberia’s Ministry of Justice is therefore likely to draw increased public attention, with many observers viewing Washington’s emphasis on holding criminal networks accountable as reinforcing the importance of a credible, transparent, and independent investigation into one of Liberia’s largest reported drug seizures.

Political analysts say the U.S. statement underscores the long-standing partnership between Liberia and the United States in strengthening justice institutions and combating organized crime, while also highlighting the international significance attached to ensuring that major narcotics investigations are pursued without interference.

As the investigation continues, many Liberians are expected to closely watch whether authorities deliver the accountability that both domestic stakeholders and international partners have consistently called for.
