The 2022 National Convention of the former ruling Unity Party (UP) has been climaxed with the election of Rev. Luther Tarpehas National Chairman to take charge ahead of the highly anticipated 2023 elections.
Ahead of the National Convention held in Gbarnga, Bong County, July 26-29, 2022, both National Chairman Amin Modad and Secretary General Mo Ali were accused of supporting the imposition of exorbitant registration fees for the various positions within the party in order to stay unto power.
But to turned out to be that Rev. Tarpeh, an inspirational speaker and owner of the Best Brain Academy and University, thrashed incumbent Chairman Amin Modad, a businessman and owner of the Bella Casa Hotel. Rev. Tarpeh obtained a total of 188 votes of the total 339 delegates to defeat the incumbent Chairman.
It can be recalled that outgoing UP Chairman Modad was constitutionally elected as National Chairman of the UP in September 2022 with over 62% of the majority votes when he defeated closest challenger and current River Gee County Senator Conmany Wesseh.
In the race for the position of National Secretary General, Amos Tweah, a former UP Youth Chairman, defeated the incumbent Mo Ali by 168 against 131 votes.
However, a former Montserrado County District 13 Representative Candidate Cornelia Kruah Togba was elected unopposed as Vice Chairman for Inter-Party Affairs following the disqualification of B. Miller Catakaw, a former MontserradoCounty District 9 Representative Candidate, due to his failure to pay his dues.
For her part, Selena Polson-Mappy, a former Bong County Superintendent defeated Josephine Francis, former MonsterradoCounty District 1 Representative, for the position of Vice Chairman for Women Affairs of the party.
Dabah Varpilah was retained unopposed as Senior National Vice Chairman of the UP.
Meanwhile, former Vice President Joseph Nyuma Boakai was elected unopposed as Standard Bearer of the UP and is expected to pick his running mate as he hopes to defeat incumbent President George Manneh Weah in 2023.
