Monrovia , Liberia: The Ministry of Health has confirmed four active cases of Mpox (commonly known as Monkeypox) in Liberia, prompting an immediate national response to contain the spread of the virus. The confirmed cases include two in Montserrado County, one in Margibi, and one in Sinoe County.
In a press statement released on Saturday, the Ministry announced that its case management pillar has been activated to ensure timely intervention. Upon notification in Montserrado, health authorities swiftly transferred the affected patient to the National Infectious Disease Center for professional care.
The Ministry is urging the public to remain calm but vigilant, stressing the importance of early reporting of symptoms such as rash, fever, or headache. “Anyone experiencing unusual symptoms should avoid close contact with others and visit the nearest health facility,” the statement advised.
To bolster prevention, Liberia has begun administering Mpox vaccines in targeted counties. Over 2,000 people have already received the vaccine in Cape Mount, Nimba, Grand Bassa, and Sinoe Counties. The vaccine is prioritized for three groups:
- Contacts of confirmed Mpox cases
- Frontline workers, including those in surveillance and case management
- Security personnel and other at-risk individuals
Enhanced surveillance and community engagement activities are also ongoing in Lofa, Montserrado, and Margibi counties.
Alongside clinical efforts, the Ministry is promoting awareness around safe practices, particularly regarding intimate contact. A list of 25 “safer sex” options has been circulated to reduce the risk of transmission. These include solo activities like masturbation and phone sex, use of condoms and gloves, avoiding skin-to-skin contact, and maintaining good hygiene.
“Monkeypox spreads through skin contact, kissing, sex, or sharing personal items,” the advisory notes. “Avoid sex entirely if you or your partner show signs of illness, such as rash or fever.”
The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to public health safety and expressed gratitude for the public’s cooperation. “We are working with urgency and diligence to contain this outbreak and protect our communities,” the statement concluded.
For more information or to report suspected symptoms, citizens are encouraged to visit the nearest health facility or contact local health teams.
