Monrovia, June 30, 2025 — President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has nominated Associate Justice Yamie Quiqui Gbeisay to serve as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Liberia. The announcement, made through the Executive Mansion, is subject to confirmation by the Liberian Senate.

This nomination comes in line with Article 54(c) of the 1986 Constitution of Liberia, which empowers the President to appoint the Chief Justice, Associate Justices, and Judges of Subordinate Courts. It also aligns with Article 72(b), mandating the retirement of justices upon reaching the age of seventy.

In his communication to the Senate, President Boakai praised Justice Gbeisay as a “distinguished jurist” who has exhibited “exemplary integrity, profound legal acumen, and commitment to upholding the rule of law and the Constitution.” The President further urged the Honorable Senate to “expeditiously consider and confirm this nomination.”

If confirmed, Justice Gbeisay will replace the outgoing Chief Justice and continue his legacy of dedicated judicial service. His appointment would signal stability and experience at the helm of Liberia’s highest court.

Profile: Associate Justice Yamie Quiqui Gbeisay

Justice Yamie Quiqui Gbeisay has built a distinguished legal career spanning over three decades in Liberia’s legal and judicial system. Prior to his nomination to the Supreme Court in 2016 by former President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Gbeisay served as a Circuit Court Judge of the 9th Judicial Circuit in Bong County, where he was widely respected for his fairness and judicial diligence.

Justice Gbeisay is an alumnus of the Louis Arthur Grimes School of Law, University of Liberia. He is also a veteran legal practitioner, having worked extensively in both criminal and civil law across various courts in the country. His rulings have often reflected a strong commitment to constitutional interpretation, due process, and the protection of individual rights.

Throughout his tenure as Associate Justice, Gbeisay authored several landmark opinions and gained a reputation for upholding the independence of the judiciary. He is also recognized for his mentorship of young lawyers and his contributions to judicial reform discussions in Liberia.

Justice Gbeisay is known for his quiet demeanor, intellectual depth, and unwavering adherence to the rule of law. His elevation to Chief Justice is seen by many legal observers as a step toward continuity and institutional integrity in Liberia’s justice system.

    President’s Broader Call

President Boakai, in the statement, also called on public officials to “continue to demonstrate diligence, commitment, integrity, professionalism, and loyalty in service to country,” reinforcing his administration’s focus on ethical leadership and effective governance.
