The Female Journalists Association of Liberia (FEJAL) has raised serious concern over the disappearance of one of its members, Amie T. Dean, who has been missing since April 2, 2026, under troubling circumstances in Margibi County.
According to FEJAL, Dean, a resident of Smell-No-Taste Community in Lower Margibi County, was last heard from after sending a distress message to a close friend indicating that she had entered a black vehicle occupied by unknown men while returning home. The message is believed to be her final communication before her phone was switched off.
Her sudden disappearance has sparked fear among media practitioners and civil society actors, particularly given the risks journalists often face in the course of their work.
In a press statement issued over the weekend, FEJAL described the situation as “deeply alarming” and called for urgent intervention by national authorities. The organization emphasized that the incident goes beyond an individual case, raising broader concerns about the safety and protection of female journalists in Liberia.
FEJAL is urging the Liberia National Police and other security agencies to immediately intensify search efforts and launch a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding Dean’s disappearance.
“The authorities must act swiftly and transparently, deploying all necessary resources to ensure her safe recovery,” the statement noted, stressing that time is critical in such cases.
The organization also called on the Government of Liberia to treat the matter with the utmost urgency, ensuring accountability for anyone found responsible.
Meanwhile, FEJAL has appealed to the public especially residents of Margibi County, transport operators, and community members to remain vigilant and assist with any information that could help locate the missing journalist.
Family members have also made a public appeal for information. Anyone with credible leads is encouraged to contact Dean’s twin sister, Amelia, through the numbers provided by the family.
