Monrovia, Liberia – April 6, 2026 — The opposition-aligned civil society group, Solidarity and Trust for a New Day (STAND), has sharply criticized the Liberian government over what it describes as a weak and ineffective response to alleged territorial encroachment by Guinea.
In a strongly worded statement issued Monday, STAND accused the administration of Joseph Boakai of failing to uphold its constitutional responsibility to defend Liberia’s sovereignty. The group described the government’s posture as “callous cowardice” and “a profound failure of resolve” in the face of what it termed a “brazen violation” of Liberian territory.
Call for Diplomatic Action
Central to STAND’s demands is the immediate expulsion of Guinea’s ambassador to Liberia. The group argued that the government has neglected to invoke provisions under the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, specifically Article 9, which allows a host country to declare a foreign diplomat persona non grata.
According to STAND, such a move would represent the minimum appropriate diplomatic response to the situation. The group further urged the government to recall Liberia’s ambassador to Guinea as a formal protest measure.
Link to Past Controversy
The statement also referenced the controversial 2024 extradition of Guinean national Ibrahima Khalil Cherif, which STAND claims emboldened Guinea’s current actions. The group alleged that the transfer, carried out under the Boakai administration, undermined Liberia’s judicial authority and signaled institutional weakness.
STAND further claimed that the incident contributed to a pattern of impunity and escalating tensions between the two countries, though these allegations have not been independently verified.
Accusations of Double Standards
In its critique, STAND accused the government of inconsistency in its use of power alleging that authorities have shown a willingness to confront domestic protesters with force while adopting a subdued stance in dealing with external threats.
The group warned that such actions risk eroding public trust and weakening the legitimacy of the government.
Threat of Civic Action
STAND indicated that it is consulting with other civil society and community-based organizations and plans to announce “decisive civic actions” in the coming days. The group emphasized that Liberia’s sovereignty is “not negotiable” and called for immediate steps to address the situation.
Government Yet to Respond
As of the time of publication, the Liberian government has not issued an official response to STAND’s statement or the specific allegations raised.
Background
Tensions between Liberia and Guinea have periodically surfaced over border and security concerns. However, the latest developments signal a potential escalation, with civil society actors increasingly demanding a firmer diplomatic stance from Monrovia.
