Says Her Call for Unity in Grand Bassa Is “Nothing but Lip Service”
A prominent Grand Bassa advocate and outspoken critic of the county’s political leadership, Togar Alexander Bealded, has accused Senate President Pro-Tempore Nyonblee Karnga Lawrence of deliberately undermining efforts toward unity and reconciliation within Grand Bassa County—particularly through her alleged involvement in the crisis that has crippled the Grand Bassa University Student Union Veterans Association (GBUSUVA).
According to Bealded, the Pro-Tempore’s frequent public calls for peace and unity are deceptive.
“It has become a cliché for people to believe Senator Lawrence is serious about reconciliation when, in fact, she is the real divider-in-chief,” Bealded asserted.
Bealded alleged that the prolonged dormancy and unresolved crisis within GBUSUVA stem directly from Senator Lawrence’s influence and the actions of individuals loyal to her. He claimed that “tons of folks aligned with the senator were given direct instructions to destabilize the organization” after realizing they could not win the GBUSUVA election against Team Watkins, a slate on which Bealded was a key member.
He further revealed that the senator allegedly rented buses and financed Team Davis, the opposing camp, while promising government jobs as incentives.
“She sponsored Team Davis in the full glare of the public and promised lucrative government positions to a few individuals like Jos Mehdeh, who is now heading the Mittal Scholarship Committee,” Bealded alleged.
Bealded argued that in a county as deeply politicized as Grand Bassa, “someone like Jos Mehdeh could never become the Head of the Mittal Scholarship Program without being a loyalist of Senator Lawrence.”
He also named Jos Mehdeh, Marlyn Mellish Tukpah, Abel Sormalah, Henry Lombeh, Emmanuel Whienyue, and several others affiliated with the Liberty Party or serving in government positions as individuals who “allowed themselves to be used by Senator Lawrence to kill an institution meant for the advancement of all university and college graduates of Bassa.”
Despite the deepening division and years of stagnation within GBUSUVA, Bealded emphasized that the senator has made no attempt to convene all parties and resolve the conflict.
“It is disturbing that since the impasse, Senator Lawrence has not called the actors of GBUSUVA to the table to fix this matter. If she truly believes in unity or reconciliation as she professes, she would have acted long ago. It’s all lip service,” Bealded concluded.
