    Monrovia, Liberia – May 13, 2025 —

Montserrado County District #11 Representative Richard Nagbe Koon has emerged as the new Speaker of the House of Representatives, securing a resounding victory with 43 votes against 26 garnered by Nimba County Representative Musa Bility, the Political Leader of (CMC).

The vote concludes a tense and highly anticipated contest for the speakership, following months of political uncertainty and internal power struggles within the 55th Legislature. Koon’s election is seen as a decisive step toward restoring leadership stability in the House and reaffirming earlier stance by the majority bloc.

Koon, a member of the Unity Party and an experienced legislator, pledged during his campaign to promote legislative reforms centered on fiscal discipline, institutional transparency, and improved welfare for members of the legislature. He has also emphasized reducing excesses in the Speaker’s budget and channeling resources toward staff development and legislative efficiency, a decision he simply said under one minute to have his earlier role reaffirmed.

In contrast, Bility, a vocal figure in Liberian politics and a businessman with a controversial past, failed to rally sufficient support despite a robust campaign. His defeat marks a significant setback for the CMC, which had positioned him as a reformist alternative, this is his new party’s second defeat in weeks.

Observers say Koon’s victory reflects growing confidence among lawmakers in his capacity to unite the fractured body and steer the House toward responsible governance. His election comes at a time when the Legislature faces mounting pressure to address national economic challenges and ensure checks and balances with the Executive Branch.

In his acceptance remarks, Koon called for unity, reconciliation, and renewed commitment to the Liberian people. “This is not my victory; it is a victory for legislative independence and the hope of our democracy,” he stated.

As the 55th Legislature moves forward, all eyes will be on Speaker Koon and how he navigates the complex political terrain to deliver on his promises of accountability and reform.
