Monrovia, Liberia – March 30, 2026 — Joseph Nyuma Boakai has nominated Jonathan K. Weedor as Chairman of the National Elections Commission (NEC), signaling a new phase in the country’s electoral leadership following the resignation of Davidetta Browne-Lansanah.
The nomination, announced Monday by the Executive Mansion in Monrovia, places Weedor at the helm of Liberia’s electoral authority, pending confirmation by the Liberian Senate. In the interim, President Boakai has instructed that he serve as Acting Chairman until lawmakers return from recess.
Weedor is no stranger to the Commission. He previously served as NEC Commissioner from 2004 to 2020, where he oversaw critical administrative portfolios, including human resources, finance, and procurement. During his tenure, he also acted as Co-Chairman, contributing to the management and operational integrity of Liberia’s electoral processes.
His experience extends beyond Liberia’s borders. Weedor has participated in multiple electoral missions across Africa, working with electoral institutions in countries such as Kenya, Ghana, and Nigeria. He has also been involved in election observation and assessment initiatives under regional bodies including the African Union and ECOWAS.
Academically, Weedor holds a Master of Arts degree with honors in Development Studies from the School for International Training in Vermont, United States, with a focus on Development Management. He also earned a Bachelor of Science degree with honors in General Forestry from the University of Liberia.
In the official statement, President Boakai expressed strong confidence in Weedor’s “competence, integrity, and professionalism,” emphasizing the importance of maintaining public trust in the electoral system. He noted that under Weedor’s leadership, the NEC is expected to continue upholding transparency, independence, and credibility in managing elections.
The nomination comes at a critical time for Liberia’s democratic institutions, as stakeholders closely watch the transition within the NEC and its implications for future electoral processes.
The Liberian Senate is expected to deliberate on the nomination upon reconvening.
