Controversial District #10 Representative has renewed debates over the most talked about budget alteration with fingers pointed at the Executive and implementers in the Legislature.
This scandal has rocked the nation as it was reported that a whooping 4 million dollars was disbursed among lawmakers in exchange for their cooperation in budget negotiations. And to make matters worse, Representative Yekeh Kolubah of District 10 Montserrado County has accused his colleagues of receiving bribes to cover up this corrupt scheme.
In a bold move, Representative Kolubah addressed the media and shed light on the alleged bribery scandal. According to him, the money was distributed through Representative Thomas Fallah, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives.
He however being an ally of embattled Speaker Fonati Koffa failed to name the Speaker in this financial scheme.
The House following an investigation linked the scheme to its Deputy Chief Clerk and has since laid the matter to rest but the newest revelation by Yekeh leaves all in awe.
This shocking revelation has caused an uproar among the citizens of Liberia, who are tired of their hard-earned tax dollars being used to line the pockets of corrupt politicians. But what exactly is Pay for Play Legislature?
It is a corrupt practice in which politicians receive money or other incentives in exchange for their vote or support on a specific issue. In this case, the budget alteration was the target, and it is a clear violation of ethics and good governance. It goes against the very principles of democracy and undermines the trust of the people in their elected officials.
The implications of this scandal are far-reaching. Not only does it leave a stain on the reputation of Liberia’s legislature, but it also has a negative impact on the nation’s development. With 4 million dollars potentially being funneled towards political gain, it raises questions about the priorities and integrity of those in power. The funds could have been used to improve infrastructure, healthcare, education, and other crucial needs of the country.
Furthermore, this pay for play mentality perpetuates a cycle of corruption that is detrimental to the progress and well-being of the nation. If lawmakers are willing to accept bribes for one issue, what is stopping them from doing it again in the future? It sets a dangerous precedent and erodes the trust of the people in their government. It is imperative that swift action is taken to address this scandal and hold those responsible accountable. The citizens of Liberia deserve to know the truth and demand transparency from their elected officials.
